A decade ago, Doug and Liza Cruze, co-owners of Cruze Architects and Cruze Construction, embarked on the transformation of the condemned Hunter Saw building. Drawn by its inherent potential, they meticulously renovated the space over the years, showcasing their expertise in converting historic buildings into modern gems even within tight budgets. Known for their work on the award-winning former Salt of the Earth restaurant in Garfield, Doug and Liza adopt a hands-on approach, intensely involved in the physical construction. Their dedication and passion have given rise to Hunter Saw, their most ambitious design, build, and development project to date. Through blood, sweat, and tears, they have breathed new life into this historic building and are excited to share it with others.
The Hunter Saw & Machine Company holds a significant place in the industrial history of Pittsburgh and Lawrenceville. Established at the turn of the 19th century, the company specialized in producing high-quality saw blades, some as large as 7 feet in diameter, and other cutting tools for the steel industry. It played a vital role in the local economy, providing employment opportunities while creating a clangor within its walls that resonated throughout the neighborhood.
Hunter Saw was part of an industrial hub that flourished along the Allegheny River during the late 1800s, supporting a vibrant immigrant population. As the steel industry experienced a decline in the mid-20th century, many manufacturing facilities, including Hunter Saw, faced closures or relocations. However, Upper Lawrenceville has experienced a remarkable revitalization, with numerous new ventures and restaurants along Butler Street. Positioned directly across from Contemporary Craft, Hunter Saw Events proudly becomes a member of this vibrant neighborhood, serving as a gateway to its bustling atmosphere.
